Parent-Child Evaluations

A Parent–Child Evaluation (PCE) is a structured, court-involved, and evaluative (not therapeutic) process designed to assess the quality and dynamics of the parent–child relationship. The purpose of this assessment is to provide objective, clinically informed findings to assist decision-making regarding safety, visitation, reunification, and permanency planning.

Parent-Child Evaluations are conducted by our co-founder and CEO, Alycia Bedrosian Hatch, MSCJ, MSW, LICSW.

Our Approach

A PCE may be used to inform DCYF and Rhode Island Family Court regarding issues related to attachment and bonding, parental protective capacities, insight into mental health and/or substance use concerns, motivation toward treatment, and overall readiness for reunification. The process may include:

  • Comprehensive clinical interviews

  • Direct parent–child observation

  • Administration of standardized assessment measures

  • Review of records and collateral documentation

  • Consultation with collateral providers, when appropriate

Findings and recommendations are grounded in child development, attachment theory, and family systems principles. The final written report is designed to inform:

  • Level of supervision for visitation

  • Specific treatment and service recommendations to enhance protective capacities

  • Reunification readiness versus alternative permanency planning

  • Indicators for ongoing monitoring and reassessment

A written court order or formal referral is required prior to initiating the evaluation. The order must clearly identify all parties to be assessed, any records or collateral information to be reviewed, and the specific referral questions to be addressed.

This process is conducted in a neutral, thorough, and trauma-informed manner, with a primary focus on child safety, permanency, and the best interests of the child.
